Rishabh Pant’s omission from Team India’s limited-overs squads for the Australia tour has raised a few eyebrows. He was doomed to be the perfect man to replace MS Dhoni after the veteran wicket-keeper batsman went on a sabbatical.

However, continuous failure and KL Rahul’s meteoric rise saw a sudden change in India’s plans. Rahul has molded himself as one of the deadliest finishers, as well as a decent wicket-keeper.

This led to Rishabh exclusion from the team during the New Zealand tour and now he has been excluded from the ODI and T20I squads itself. In the same light, former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has now shared his thoughts on Pant’s omission.

Talking from the management’s perspective, Sehwag said that Rishabh needs to show more matureness, otherwise he won’t get many chances.

“It wasn’t surprising that Pant was not included,” Sehwag stated on Cricbuzz. “On the last tour (i New Zealand), he was not part of the playing XI despite being fit. KL Rahul had performed well as a wicketkeeper and he was used as the regular wicketkeeper in the limited-overs series, and Rishabh Pant was left out,” he said.

“It might’ve been a way to send a message to Rishabh Pant that he needs to change his style of play. He would keep throwing his wickets, and he doesn’t finish off games, and he needs to learn to finish off games. If he doesn’t do that, he would not be given chances,” he added.

Sehwag also shared a similar story from his playing days, to justify Pant’s omission.

“During our time, Rahul Dravid was used as a wicket-keeper because we did not have a good keeper till MS Dhoni arrived. So, we used him as a keeper because he would be used as an extra batsman in the playing XI,” he said.

“Though Rishabh Pant is a good keeper, the way he gives away his wickets, (Virat) Kohli and Ravi Shastri might not be pleased with him. Only Rishabh Pant can make this change. He needs to finish off games in every opportunity he gets. He needs to prove that he can return to the team,” he added.
