Just before the start of IPL 2026, a major upheaval has been seen: a big businessman from the United States, Kal Somani, has acquired 100 percent ownership of Rajasthan Royals for about 1.63 billion dollars, which is approximately 13,600 crore rupees. This raises the question—who exactly is Kal Somani, who has bought an IPL team at such a massive price?
So, Kal Somani is a businessman based in Arizona, USA, with more than 15 years of business experience. He has worked across multiple sectors including education, technology, data privacy, artificial intelligence, governance, and sports tech. Somani is the founder of several companies, including IntraEdge and Truyo. Apart from this, he has also been active in several initiatives related to AI governance.
He also has a strong presence in the world of sports. He is the co-owner of Motor City Golf Club and has been an initial investor in projects like TMRW Sports and the TGL Golf League.
Kal Somani’s association with Rajasthan Royals is not new. He first invested in the franchise in 2021. At that time, he had expressed strong confidence in the rapidly growing IPL market and its future. That same confidence has now led him toward taking full ownership of the team.
However, the change in ownership rights will become effective only after the IPL 2026 season. For now, Rajasthan Royals are busy with their preparations. The team will play its first match against CSK on March 30 in Guwahati.
Before this new deal, British-Indian businessman Manoj Badale held a 65% stake in Rajasthan Royals. But now, Kal Somani will have the full 100% ownership. However, this deal is subject to BCCI approval and is expected to be signed soon.
Since the first season of the IPL, Rajasthan has not been able to lift the trophy even once. It is hoped that under the new ownership, Rajasthan Royals will achieve something remarkable.
