Ajit Agarkar, the chief selector of the Indian cricket team, has requested the BCCI to extend his contract until the 2027 ODI World Cup. His current tenure has already been extended once. Before the 2025 IPL, the BCCI extended his contract by one year, taking it up to June 2026.
Former fast bowler Ajit Agarkar was appointed as the chairman of the selection committee in July 2023. During his tenure, India has won three titles. The team won the T20 World Cup in 2024 and the Champions Trophy earlier last year. India also reached the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they lost to Australia. In addition, the team recently defended its T20 World Cup title.
According to reports, discussions on this matter have already taken place. Now it remains to be seen whether the BCCI will approve Agarkar’s request. At present, the board does not have a strong alternative for the chief selector’s position.
The Indian team’s next major challenges are the World Test Championship and the ODI World Cup. It will be interesting to see whether the BCCI makes any big decision before these tournaments.
