Dashing Punjab batsman, Shubman Gill, who amassed a plethora of runs while playing for India A and Punjab in first-class cricket, will be making his Test debut for the national team if we are to go by the news coming from Christchurch.

As opener Prithvi Shaw missed Thursday’s training session due to a swelling on his left foot, it is more or less certain that a half-fit Shaw would be rested and Shubman Gill might get a chance in the second Test.

Shubman Gill had a good net session on Thursday. During the session, head coach Ravi Shastri was seen paying extra attention to Gill.

At one point, Shastri walked up to Gill and was seen giving some technical inputs about footwork to check his uppish drives.

Shaw had a poor outing in the first Test in Wellington, getting dismissed cheaply in both the innings. Tim Southee got him for 16 with an unplayable delivery in the first innings and he also found Trent Boult’s short ball difficult to negotiate when he was on 14 in the second essay.

Shubman Gill has so far scored 2133 runs in 34 first-class innings at an unbelievable average of 73.55 that includes seven centuries and 10 half-centuries
