Punjab Kings (PBKS), formerly Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), have been part of every Indian Premier League (IPL) edition since 2008. However, they are also known as one of the most underperforming franchises in the history of the famous T20 league. While Punjab have never won the IPL to date, what is shocking is that they have made it past the league only two times in the 15-year-old history of the competition. Punjab Kings were semi-finalists in 2008 and runners-up in 2014. In all other years, they have been eliminated from the league stage. Punjab have finished sixth for four consecutive editions in a row, from 2019 to 2022.In 2023 and 2024, PBKS finished eighth and ninth in the points table.
Punjab have been in the news more for the controversy than their performances. In 2008, Punjab bowler Sreesanth was seen in tears after Harbhajan Singh slapped him during a match between Punjab and Mumbai Indians at the IS Bindra PCA Stadium in Mohali. The former off-spinner was banned over the incident. Also, after the controversy surrounding the BCCI and Lalit Modi in 2010, IPL announced that it had terminated the franchise contracts of Kings XI Punjab and the Rajasthan Royals (RR). Punjab was reinstated with the involvement of the High Court.
Punjab Kings’ most impressive IPL performance came in the 2014 season when they reached the final. Batting first in the final against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, Punjab put up an impressive 199/4 on the board as Wriddhiman Saha smashed an unbeaten 115 off 55 balls. At the same time, Manan Vohra contributed 67 off 52 deliveries. However, Manish Pandey’s terrific 94 off 50 balls saw KKR chase down the target in 19.3 overs with three wickets in hand.
In February 2021, Kings XI Punjab changed their name to Punjab Kings. Regarding the move, co-owner Ness Wadia stated that the franchise wanted to relook at things and rebrand after 13 seasons of IPL. He expected the franchise to start afresh after a name change. However, Punjab have failed to show much improvement even in the four seasons after the name change. According to reports, the brand value of Punjab Kings in 2024 was estimated to be around $69 million.
