Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are one of the big franchises in the Indian Premier League (IPL). They have featured in every edition of the T20 tournament since the first competition in 2008. The franchise is owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan, actor Juhi Chawla and her spouse Jay Mehta. The team is extremely popular due to its celebrity connection.
After producing mixed results in the initial editions, Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL for the first time in 2012. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) batted first in the game at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai and posted 190 for 3 in their 20 overs. KKR chased down the target in the last over as Manvinder Bisla top-scored with 89 off 48 balls.
Kolkata won the IPL for the second time in 2014. This time, they beat Punjab by three wickets in another high-scoring final at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. Punjab batted first and put up 199/4 as Wriddhiman Saha smashed 115 not out off 55 balls and Manan Vohra 67 off 52. Manish Pandey played a brilliant knock in the chase to ensure Kolkata Knight Riders clinched their second IPL title. He hammered 94 off 50 balls, with the aid of seven fours and six sixes.
KKR made the playoffs for three years in a row, from 2016 to 2018. However, they could not go all the way. The franchise made its third final in 2021 but went down to CSK by 27 runs in the final. In 2022 and 2023, they were eliminated from the group stage but won their third title in 2024. KKR defeated SRH in the final.
Sourav Ganguly, Gautam Gambhir, Andre Russell, Ricky Ponting, Brendon McCullum, Chris Gayle, Eoin Morgan, Sunil Narine, Jacques Kallis, Robin Uthappa, and Dinesh Karthik are some of the prominent names who have represented the Kolkata franchise over the years.
