Punjab Kings (PBKS) is a franchise cricket team based in Mohali, Punjab, and plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Established in 2008 as the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP), which was rebranded as Punjab Kings in 2021. The franchise is jointly owned by Mohit Burman, Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, and Karan Paul.
The team’s captain is Shikhar Dhawan, and Trevor Bayliss is the head coach. Apart from the 2014 season, when they topped the league table and finished runners-up, the team has made only one other playoff appearance (2008) in the remaining seasons.
The team plays its home matches at the PCA Stadium, Mohali. Since 2010, they have also been playing some of their home games at Dharamsala or Indore. The Inderjit Singh Bindra Stadium is located in Mohali, Punjab. It is popularly referred to as the Mohali Stadium. Geetanshu Kalra built the stadium, and the seating capacity is 27000. The stadium is named after former BCCI president & former PCA president Inderjit Singh Bindra.
Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, abbreviated as the HPCA Stadium, is located in Dharamshala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India. With a capacity of 23000, the stadium is situated at an altitude of 1,457 m above sea level and is considered one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.
In 2024, the Punjab based team listed Maharaja Yadavindra Singh Stadium in Chandigarh as their home ground for their opening game against Delhi Capitals.
FORMAT
The teams are split into two groups, A and B, with five teams in each group. Each team will play one game against all five teams in the other group, both home and away, and two games against the four teams in their own group. In total, each team will play seven home games and seven away games. After the group stage, the top four teams based on total points will advance to the playoffs. In the playoffs, the top two teams will face each other in “Qualifier 1”, while the other two teams will play in the “Eliminator” match. The winner of Qualifier 1 will advance directly to the final. The losing team from Qualifier 1 will get a second chance by playing the winner of the Eliminator in “Qualifier 2”. The winner of Qualifier 2 will also advance to the final. The team that wins the final match will be crowned the champions of the Indian Premier League.
