Delhi Capitals (formerly Delhi Daredevils) is a franchise cricket team based in Delhi that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The GMR Group and the JSW Group jointly own the franchise. The aim of the team, since its inception in 2008, is to take along with it the fans and create experiences and moments that add positively to the sport’s history.
In December 2018, the team changed its name from the Delhi Daredevils to the Delhi Capitals. The team had its fair share of struggles but showed tremendous improvement in the last few seasons. Though Delhi Capitals never laid its hands on the IPL Title, the team reached the playoffs 4 times and once in the final. With coach Ricky Ponting the team is led Rishabh Pant who is back in action after his accident in 2022.
Delhi Capitals will play their home games on 2 venues- Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi and the ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium in Vishakhapatnam.
The Arun Jaitley Stadium is owned and operated by the Delhi & District Cricket Association (DDCA) and is located on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg, New Delhi. It was established in 1883 as the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium and was named after the nearby Kotla Fort. It is India’s second oldest functional international cricket stadium, after the Eden Gardens of Kolkata.
Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy ACA–VDCA Cricket Stadium, also called Dr. Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy Andhra Cricket Association–Visakhapatnam District Cricket Association Cricket Stadium, is a multi-purpose stadium in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, used mainly for international cricket matches. The two-tiered, column-free stadium was designed to give spectators unobstructed views. Its pitch favors batsmen.
FORMAT
The teams are split into two groups, A and B, with five teams in each group. Each team will play one game against all five teams in the other group, both home and away, and two games against the four teams in their own group. In total, each team will play seven home games and seven away games. After the group stage, the top four teams based on total points will advance to the playoffs. In the playoffs, the top two teams will face each other in “Qualifier 1”, while the other two teams will play in the “Eliminator” match. The winner of Qualifier 1 will advance directly to the final. The losing team from Qualifier 1 will get a second chance by playing the winner of the Eliminator in “Qualifier 2”. The winner of Qualifier 2 will also advance to the final. The team that wins the final match will be crowned the champions of the Indian Premier League.
