Leg spinner Wanindu Hasaranga recorded a career-best four wickets for nine runs Thursday as Sri Lanka beat India by seven wickets in the third and final Twenty20 international and clinched the three-match series 2-1.
It was Sri Lanka’s first T20 series win since their 3-0 victory against Pakistan in 2019. They had lost five consecutive series since then. India’s loss comes after six consecutive series wins.
India captain Shikar Dhawan won the toss and chose to bat first but Sri Lanka’s bowlers restricted them to 81-8 in 20 overs with Kuldeep Yadav top-scoring with 23 batting at No. 7. It was India’s third-lowest total in the shortest format of cricket.
Dhawan wants to represent India in T20 World Cup, but former India pacer Zaheer Khan has left the batsman out from his 15-member team for the showpiece event.
He picked Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul as the first-choice opening pair. “I will open with KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma. Virat and Surya will follow them. I know Virat has made the statement that he wants to open the innings. But I would still say that Virat only opens in case Hardik is not available to bowl. In that scenario, you can sacrifice one batsman and get an extra bowler”, the former India pacer said on Cricbuzz.
Suryakumar was in exceptional form in the recently concluded matches against Sri Lanka.
“I have Chahal as the lead leg spinner and also went in with Rahul Chahar as his backup. In this format, we have seen that leg spinner is such a crucial factor. Chakravarthy/Sundar will be the spinners who would be bowling with the new ball. If you want that mystery element, you can choose Chakravarthy, but otherwise, you can go in with Sundar as well,” said Zaheer.
