Former India captain Sourav Ganguly was left amazed by Shubman Gill’s “flawless” innings at Edgbaston, which helped India secure a historic 336-run victory over England. This victory marked India’s first-ever win at the venue in 19 attempts and also their biggest win on foreign soil.
In an interview with Revsportz, Ganguly described it as the finest batting performance he had witnessed on English soil in the last three decades, with Gill registering scores of 269 and 161. This achievement made him the first captain in Test history to surpass 400 runs in a single match.
“Shubman is batting like a dream, take a look at my tweet, and you’ll understand. In my three decades of playing and watching cricket in the UK, this is one of the finest batting displays I’ve ever seen. He was absolutely flawless. There are no weaknesses in his game, and the English bowlers were unable to get him out. Watch how he bats, and you’ll see exactly what I mean. Gill isn’t making any mistakes. He’s always been a joy to watch, but now he’s demonstrating the hunger and temperament of a top player. If you see him now, you’ll be left wondering how his Test average is below 50,” said Ganguly.
“The standout quality of Shubman in this series is his determination to score big, If you look at every innings, he has always aimed for a substantial score. A hundred isn’t enough for him and he wants to get to a double century, and that’s truly remarkable to witness,” he added.
“This series could be the moment that shapes Shubman Gill’s future as a captain,” he concluded.
