Sunil Gavaskar is miffed with captain Rohit Sharmka for missing the first ODI between India and Australia. He said Rohit shouldn’t miss any games until the 2023 ODI World Cup.
Despite being favourites for the trophy, India lost to the Steve Smith-led team by 1-2. Rohit didn’t play the first game because of the marriage of his brother-in-law. Meanwhile, the visiting team completely outplayed the Men in Blue in Chennai. Chasing 270 runs to win, India lost the contest by 21 runs.
“He needs to play all the games. You can’t have a captain who plays one game and then goes for a rest. I know it was a family function, but you can’t have that in a World Cup year. Finish everything before unless there is an emergency,” Gavaskar told Star Sports.
Opener Rohit scored 13 off 15 balls in the 2nd ODI, which Australia won by 10 wickets. In the third contest, he accumulated 33 off 17 balls. “You need continuity in leadership; otherwise, you will have two leaders in one format,” he added.
