Shubman Gill was expected to play against Sikkim in the Vijay Hazare Trophy on Saturday. However, he was ruled out of the match due to food poisoning. According to Sportstar, Gill was sidelined at the last minute.
He was recently snubbed from the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Gill returned to the shortest format in the Asia Cup 2025 but the batter struggled to get going and a below-par performance in the first three matches against South Africa sealed his fate.
Gill’s place was questioned by former players and fans. He was preferred over Sanju Samson, despite the wicket-keeper batter being the most consistent performer. Samson was told to bat in the middle order and was omitted from the playing XI after failures.
Gill missed the last T20I against South Africa due to a toe injury and was replaced by Samson, who amassed 37 runs off 22 balls.
The match between Punjab and Sikkim is being played at the Jaipuria Vidyalaya ground.
Earlier, the BCCI had asked all centrally contracted players to play at least two matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma represented Delhi and Mumbai, respectively.
Meanwhile, Ajit Agarkar and the other selectors will pick the ODI squad for the three-match series against New Zealand. Gill is expected to attend the meeting.
