Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, raised concerns on Tuesday regarding the decision to pull Bangladesh’s fast bowler Mustafizur Rahman out of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He raised concerns about how the action against one player could have an impact on the broader diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh.

The Kolkata Knight Riders decided to release Mustafizur Rahman after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) directed the team to take that step, amid escalating diplomatic tensions between India and Bangladesh.

In a press interaction at an official event, Abdullah raised doubts about how the removal of one player could improve the situation in Bangladesh or help strengthen the relationship between the two nations.

“What harm has that player caused? I understand that our relations with Pakistan are strained, but what have the people of Bangladesh done to us? Our relationship with the people of Bangladesh has always been solid, and it remains that way,” Abdullah stated.

Abdullah also pointed out that Bangladesh had not wronged India and questioned the reasoning behind targeting a single player in this situation.

“Bangladesh has not engaged in any acts of terrorism against our nation, nor has it harmed us. We have a solid relationship. Still, that player has been sent away,” he added.

He also warned that this decision could have significant implications for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, which is set to be co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

He mentioned that there are now growing concerns regarding Bangladesh’s participation in the tournament in India.”The people of Bangladesh are expressing that they won’t come to India to play. They are requesting that their matches be held in another location.”

He emphasised the need to keep sports separate from politics, urging caution when handling political matters.

“What wrong has this player done? He was prepared to play. Neither his team nor he wanted to part ways. “
