Suryakumar Yadav has said that Indian players tried their best to keep the mood light around head coach Gautam Gambhir during the ICC T20 World Cup 2026, but it was only after the final against New Zealand that they managed to achieve success. He revealed Gambhir’s intensity was never down throughout the tournament, and the coach kept everyone locked in from the first game to the summit clash.
“We tried several times to make him laugh during the World Cup, but our games were intense from the start until the end. However, we saw him smiling after winning the final. Everyone was happy,” Suryakumar said on PTI.
Gambhir never believes in public display of emotions, and carries the competitive edge into the coaching world that was part of his playing career. He has become more serious after taking charge of the Indian team, with him focusing on the results and performances of the players.
The memorable moment in Ahmedabad allowed him to relax and enjoy the success of the team and his coaching stint as well.
MS Dhoni, who was present at the Narendra Modi Stadium, also urged his former teammate Gambhir to smile as the team was able to defend the title.
“Coach Sahab smile looks great on you. Intensity with smile is a killer combo, very well done,” Dhoni wrote.
