Former India player Wasim Jaffer is against selecting players like Umran Malik. The veteran wants selectors to stop selecting cricketers based on one good IPL season.

Umran, who took 22 wickets for Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022, was fast-tracked into the Indian side and made his T20I debut in Ireland. He was dropped after playing just three games and was recently recalled for the tour of New Zealand.

He made his ODI debut and took 2 wickets against the Kiwis. Leading experts praised the youngster for the improvement in his line and length.

But Jaffer thinks the players should toil hard in domestic cricket for 2-3 seasons before getting a chance to play for the national team.

“Selectors don’t need to pick whoever does well in their 1st IPL season. Let them perform consistently for 2-3 seasons in FC too. Let them be fully ready. That’s a reason we confuse ourselves with selection dilemma. Ind cap shouldn’t be given easily & quickly. It should be earned,” he said.
