Former India cricketer Wasim Jaffer has backed Mayank Agarwal to open the innings with Rohit Sharma in the upcoming five-match Test series against England.
With the young opener, Shubman Gill, likely to miss the series against Joe Root-led side, Jaffer has reckoned that Mayank should be given the nod ahead of KL Rahul to bat with swashbuckling opener, Rohit.
Mayank was dropped from the playing XI after his poor outing in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The 30-year-old batsman scored just 78 runs in the four-match Test series against Australia.
However, Jaffer believes the forthcoming Test series in England is a great opportunity for Mayank to prove his prowess yet again.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Wasim Jaffer said, “It will be a big opportunity for Mayank and KL Rahul with Mayank being my first preference. He has had an excellent career so far. He was dropped after a poor outing in Australia but I am pretty sure he will be looking forward to this opportunity.”
“It is a very big series of five Test matches which can make or break a cricketer’s career. I feel KL Rahul can also fit somewhere in the middle-order if not as an opener,” the 43-year-old added.
Indian players are currently enjoying their three-week break from bio-bubble life in the UK and they will start their preparations for the series against England from July 14.
