Team India’s decision to send Shardul Thakur as the nightwatchman ahead of middle-order batter Cheteshwar Pujara at the fag end of Day 3 of the first Test against the hosts served its purpose. He played out the remaining balls to take the team to 16/1 at stumps.

On Day 4, Shardul was looking confident before he was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada.

Wiaan Mulder took a good catch in the slip cordon to get rid of the Indian player. However, an image surfaced on social media, which showed that Rabada had overstepped with third umpire failing to spot it and Thakur had to depart. “Great umpiring. The Shardul Thakur wicket” the handle tweeted.

The fans soon started targeting third umpire for his mistake.
