Australia opener David Warner on Thursday took to his official Instagram handle and congratulated New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson for winning the inaugural World Test Championship in Southampton. The Kiwis outclassed Virat Kohli-led India by 8 wickets to clinch their first major ICC trophy.
Sharing the picture of Kohli and Williamson, Warner wrote, “Credit to these two fantastic leaders! A great hard-fought game, even with a bit of weather about there was an eventual winner and that was NZ.
“Awesome for test cricket!! Well done to @kane_s_w and his team for being the victors of the WTC.”
India were 64/2 when the play started on the reserve day of the finale with Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara at the crease. However, Kyle Jamieson was up to the task and dismissed both of them.
The young wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant tried his best but even he couldn’t bail out his team from the tricky situation. Trent Boult got better of him when Pant was looking good having scored 41 runs off 88 balls.
After the Indian team was bowled out for just 170 runs, Ravichandran Ashwin started with a bang and dismissed Tom Latham and Devon Conway.
However, Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor had other plans as their gritty 96-run unbeaten stand for the third wicket took Kiwis over the line.
