Batting legend VVS Laxman feels India should play Suryakumar Yadav in the upcoming five-match T20I series against England which is set to kick-off from March 12 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
Suryakumar was expected to make his international debut during the Australia tour but the selectors ignored him despite his brilliant performances in the domestic circuit in the past few years.
He finally received his maiden India call-up along with youngsters Ishan Kishan and Rahul Tewatia ahead of the white-ball leg against Eoin Morgan-led side.
Lauding the 30-year-old player for showing enormous patience, Laxman said that Suryakumar deserves a spot in the playing XI in the forthcoming series. The former India cricketer also pointed out that the Mumbai-born batsman is a prime example of how success is not far if one stays patient.
Speaking on Star Sports Network, the 46-year-old said, “Surya deserves it, I think he is a great role model for youngsters, especially in India; because they lose patience very quickly – because all positive run-scorers in First-Class cricket expect to get into the Indian team but it is difficult.
“There is so much of talent and competition, but what did Suryakumar do? – he goes back to domestic cricket, scores runs for Mumbai, whenever he gets an opportunity, plays in tough situations, and wins the match and that’s what you expect from a player.”
