Virat Kohli is in the middle of an extended batting slump.

Former Australian spinner Brad Hogg believes Virat Kohli should open the innings along with Rohit Sharma in T20Is. The former India skipper bats at No.3 for the Men in Blue.

The idea of Kohli opening the batting with Rohit was discussed during the build-up to the ICC T20 World Cup 2021. The pair played as openers in the fifth T20I against England, registering 94 runs in nine overs. However, it ended up as an experiment as India went with the pair of KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma in the tournament.

Opining that the topic of Kohli opening the innings with Sharma should be reconsidered, Hogg said on his YouTube channel: “For me, Virat Kohli should open the innings with Rohit Sharma. I would like Shreyas Iyer to come at No.3 and Rishabh Pant at No.4. Have to fit KL Rahul in the batting order as well. If Hardik Pandya is fit, he and Ravindra Jadeja can bat at No.6 and 7.’

Regarding the bowling attack, he said: “Siraj, Bumrah, and Shami should play as fast bowlers. Chahal will be the leading spinner. Suryakumar Yadav coming in at No.5. If Pandya is not fit, then Venkatesh Iyer coming in at No.6.”

The return of Hardik could improve the balance of the Indian team. The Australian wickets assist fast bowlers, which could see only one leading spinner featuring in the playing XI.
