Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed Mumbai captain for the remaining Vijay Hazare Trophy Elite Group C games in Jaipur. Iyer has replaced regular skipper Shardul Thakur, who has been sidelined due to injury. Mumbai are second in Group C and will take on Himachal Pradesh on Tuesday before playing against Punjab on January 8.
“The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has appointed Shreyas Iyer as the captain of the Mumbai team for the remaining league matches of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
“Shreyas Iyer has replaced Shardul Thakur, who has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury. Iyer brings calmness and tactical acumen. The association is confident that Mumbai will perform well under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy. We wish Shardul Thakur a speedy recovery and extend our wishes to Shreyas Iyer and the other players for the upcoming matches,” said MCA Secretary Prof. Dr. Unmesh Khanvilkar in the statement.
Iyer has been named in the squad for the three-match ODI series against New Zealand, starting January 11. Mumbai will have to appoint a new captain for the knockouts of the Vijay Hazare Trophy once Iyer leaves for the New Zealand ODI series.
