Australia will have a new captain for the Ashes after Tim Paine stepped down from his job over a sexting scandal. Former wicket-keeper batter wants the management to appoint Pat Cummins as Australia’s next Test skipper.
“I think Pat Cummins is the best choice, and I have got no problems with him taking the job,” Gilchrist told Reuters.
“They should have him if he is ready to take the job, and he must be happy to take the role as he is vice-captain,” he added.
Cummins would be only the second specialist fast bowler since Ray Lindwall to lead the side.
“I see no reason to pigeonhole Pat as a fast bowler who can’t do it,” said Gilchrist.
“He is respected by players and deserves the job.”
