Washington Sundar was injured during the ODI series against New Zealand and missed the five-match T20I series against the Kiwis. He went to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation.
India’s chances will be boosted by the return of all-rounder Washington Sundar, who has been declared fit ahead of the team’s second match in the ICC T20 World Cup 2026. The Men in Blue were in big trouble, having lost 6 wickets for 77 in the campaign opener against the USA at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. However, Suryakumar Yadav’s 84 not out took the score to 161.
India managed to defend the total, restricting the rivals to 132/8 in 20 overs. Suryakumar revealed that Washington, who has been out of the team since the T20I series against New Zealand, is set to join the squad for the match against Namibia in Delhi.
“He is fit and will join the squad before the game against Namibia in Delhi,” he said.
Washington Sundar was injured during the ODI series against New Zealand and missed the five-match T20I series against the Kiwis. He went to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation.
He was told to bat and bowl for a week before getting clearance from the medical and sports science team. India are already without Harshit Rana, who has been ruled out of the World Cup and replaced by Mohammed Siraj. Jasprit Bumrah also missed the opening clash due to illness. Meanwhile, Sundar’s return is likely to keep Rinku Singh out of the playing XI.
India’s next match is on February 12 against Namibia at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium.
