Overview:
While New Zealand hold the upper hand in the T20 World Cup encounters, India enter the upcoming clash on the back of sizzling form.
Former India skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni arrived in Ahmedabad on Sunday morning as the Men in Blue gear up to face New Zealand in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 final at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium. Dhoni, who witnessed India’s thrilling semi-final triumph over England at Wankhede, is expected to watch the summit clash.
Dhoni along with wife Sakshi was present in the stands and was joined by Bollywood stars Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Alia Bhatt, and Anil Kapoor. KL Rahul and former India skipper Rohit Sharma also made their presence felt as India fought hard to overcome England in a close encounter.
India clinched their maiden ICC Men’s T20 World Cup crown in 2007 under Dhoni, overcoming arch-rivals Pakistan in the final. Rohit was the skipper when India secured their second T20 World Cup title in 2024. The responsibility now falls on Suryakumar Yadav’s shoulders to replicate the success. India have a chance to become the first team to lift the T20 World Cup trophy on home soil. Meanwhile, New Zealand are determined to clinch their first-ever title after finishing as runners-up in the 2021 edition.

The final offers India a chance to enter record books. New Zealand’s focus will be on restricting India’s dynamic batting unit and navigating the bowling of Jasprit Bumrah.
India and New Zealand entered the final after strong displays in the semi-finals. After being beaten in the group stage by South Africa and in the Super Eights by England, New Zealand dominated in the final four. They held the Proteas to 169/8 and completed the chase in 12.5 overs, with Finn Allen smashing a 33-ball hundred, setting the T20 World Cup record for the fastest ton.
The Men in Blue were unstoppable through the group stage, with only a stumble coming against South Africa in the Super Eight stage. India posted 253/7 in the semi-final against England.
While New Zealand hold the upper hand in the T20 World Cup encounters, India enter the upcoming clash on the back of sizzling form. The Black Caps have never been toppled by India in the tournament, claiming wins in 2007, 2016, and 2021. However, the sub-continent nation flexed their muscles in T20I series on home soil, cruising to a 4-1 triumph.
