South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad accepted his mistake for using the word grovel during the second Test match against India in Guwahati.

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad sparked widespread criticism on social media after his remarks following Day 4 of the second Test in Guwahati. With India set a final-day chase of more than 500 runs, Conrad commented that he wanted his side to make India “grovel.” The statement caught many off guard in the Indian cricket circle, and former stars Anil Kumble and Cheteshwar Pujara admitted they were surprised.

“We wanted India to stay on their feet in the field for as long as possible. We wanted them to grovel, by batting them out of the contest and then telling them to come out and try to survive on the final day and the extra hour this evening,” Conrad said in the press conference.

Kumble, widely considered as one of the greatest spinners, said he believed South Africa should have shown more humility, especially when they are on the verge of achieving a significant triumph against India.

“There is a lot of history behind that phrase. Former England captain used these words against a legendary West Indies team, and everyone remembers what happened afterwards. South Africa will most likely win the series, but when you are in a dominant position, your language becomes even more important. Showing humility is crucial in such moments. I honestly didn’t expect this from the coach or the support staff. When you are winning, the first thing you should do is remain humble.”

Ahead of the fifth day, Pujara said he hoped that the comment would motivate the Indian team.

“It can motivate the team, but it also stings. I don’t think those words will be well-received inside the dressing room. The right way to respond is by showing character on the field. We’re in this situation because we haven’t performed well, and the answer has to come from the batters,” he said.
