Gill had played a knock of 91 runs in India's second innings, helping the team chase down the target of 328.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has backed Shubman Gill to open the innings for India with Rohit Sharma against England in the four-match Test series. The young opening batsman made an impressive start to his Test career in the recently-concluded tour of Australia.

After being asked to replace Prithvi Shaw in the playing XI for the last three Tests, Gill lived up to the hype surrounding him by playing a series of crucial knocks for the Virat Kohli-less side in his debut tour.

The 21-year-old played a match-changing knock of 91 to help Ajinkya Rahane-led Team India stun the mighty Aussies in the series decider at The Gabba. However, Gambhir wants Gill to keep his head down as international cricket can be tough.

“Gill should be opening with Rohit Sharma, no doubt about it. But let’s not jump the gun. We just can’t put someone really high up there. Yes, he has got the talent but he needs to keep his head down because international cricket can be tough,” Gambhir told Star Sports.

“Yes, you have had a honeymoon start to your international career – it can’t be better than this. Playing in Australia, winning the series with a young side – you have done really well,” he added.

“You have batted beautifully, no doubt about it, but let’s give him time as well and let him develop on his own rather than putting too much pressure and too many expectations on him.”

In 6 innings, Shubman scored 259 at an average of 51.80. Gill is likely to open the batting alongside Rohit Sharma in the first Test of the upcoming four-match series against England, starting from February 5 in Chennai.

India and England will also play 5 T20Is and 3 ODIs after the conclusion of the Test series.
