Gill, who leads India in Tests and ODIs, hasn't been among the runs in the shortest format of the game and was dismissed for a duck in the second T20I against South Africa in New Chandigarh.
Irfan Pathan said Shubman Gill’s failures are putting pressure on the team management, and the decision-makers are wondering what to do. Pathan mentioned that even if Sanju Samson is brought back, it won’t be easy, as he will need time to find his touch again. Gill, who leads India in Tests and ODIs, hasn’t been among the runs in the shortest format of the game and was dismissed for a duck in the second T20I against South Africa in New Chandigarh.
“Shubman Gill got a good ball and was stuck in the crease. Suryakumar Yadav needs to focus on his offside play. He was in no position to play a stroke when he was dismissed. If Gill was in form, he would have played deliveries easily. He is not in form,” Irfan Pathan said.
“It is a bad sign that runs are not coming from Gill’s bat. The pressure is increasing on him and the team management. The situation shouldn’t get worse. If the runs are not coming, bringing Sanju Samson back will also not help, as even he will need time to get going. There are many questions, and if they go back to Samson, he will have to score runs,” he added.
Irfan also highlighted the flop show of captain Suryakumar. “He is the captain and his spot his secure in the team. However, he is under pressure as a player as runs are not coming from his bat. His form will be crucial before the T20 World Cup next year.
“His batting position has to be right, and he should improve his performance as he is playing straight deliveries to the leg side. When you are not scoring runs, you should look to play in the off-side. He has the skills to use the pace of the bowlers to score runs,” he concluded.
