Shubman Gill had a disastrous Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 in Australia. He was expected to score heavily after his sensational performance in the previous Test series Down Under but the batter failed with the bat, and with India losing 1-3, Gill is under pressure.

Tte right-handed batter scored 13, 20, 1, 28 and 31. He was not the only one who struggled in Australia, but even Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli registered low scores.

fFormer India opener Kris Srikkanth has slammed Gill, calling him an overrated cricketer. “I have always said that Shubman Gill is an overrated cricketer but nobody took me seriously. He is a highly overrated cricketer from the current generation,” he said.

Questioning Gill’s continued selection in the playing XI, Srikkanth asked the selectors why Suryakumar Yadav hasn’t been backed like Gill. “When someone like Shubman Gill can get a long run, players like Suryakumar Yadav deserves same treatment. SKY could have been given a longer rope in red-ball cricket,” he added.

“Suryakumar failed in the only Test he played for India and the selectors decided to continue with him in only white-ball formats. It means you will have to look at other players in Test cricket. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sai Sudharsan have done well in domestic cricket and other tours. The selectors should promote these players instead of persisting with Shubman Gill,” he mentioned.

“Gill has managed to survive because he scores in one out of ten chances. Anyone can score runs and take wickets in India but you need to perform in SENA countries to justify your selection,” he concluded.

Gill missed the series opener due to an injury, but returned for the second and third Tests. He was dropped from the Playing XI in the fourth contest. Rohit opted out of the fifth and final game, allowing the management to bring back Gill.
