Shreyas Iyer is out for at least three weeks after picking up a left rib cage injury during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney. It is still unclear if he will recover in time to play in India’s first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on November 30.
“He’ll need to report to the Centre of Excellence once he returns. We’re waiting for detailed medical reports to determine if he’ll need additional recovery time. In case it turns out to be a hairline fracture, the healing process could take longer,” a BCCI official familiar with the matter told PTI on the condition of anonymity.
Regarding his participation in the South Africa series, the source said, “It’s still early to determine. If he requires three weeks before returning to play, it may be touch-and-go whether he will be ready by November 30.”
He has been concentrating on limited formats, having stepped away from red-ball cricket for six months because of back problems.

“Shreyas Iyer injured his left rib cage while fielding. He has been taken to the hospital for a detailed evaluation and assessment of the injury,” BCCI confirmed in a statement.
India clinched a nine-wicket victory in the dead rubber, thanks to an unbroken 121 from Rohit Sharma and a solid 74 from Virat Kohli while chasing 237.
