Shreyas Iyer was India’s best performer in the recently concluded T20I series against Sri Lanka. He remained unbeaten during three matches and amassed more than 200 runs.
The right-handed batter was named the Man of the Match twice while bagging the Player of the Series as well.
However, the Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik feels that Iyer won’t be in the Playing XI at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 scheduled to be played in Australia.
Iyer was regularly played after former skipper Virat Kohli was rested. He grabbed the opportunities with both hands and registered scores of 57 not out off 28 balls, 44-ball 74 not out and an unbeaten 73 off 45 balls in three games.
Despite the knocks, in conversation with Cricbuzz, Karthik admitted that Iyer is aware that he won’t be included in the Playing XI for the global event later this year.
“I think he is aware that he may not start at the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. But he has booked his place in the squad. You have a set of 4-5 players who can walk into this team. Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul, I can go on,” he said.
Karthik hailed the team’s new players, who have been impressive since the last T20 World Cup in the UAE.
“The good thing is that every player coming into the team is trying to put up a good show. They are ready to represent India for a long time. For the moment, you have to say that Shreyas Iyer has batted brilliantly, and the fans of the Kolkata Knight Riders will be happy with his batting,” the veteran wicketkeeper-batsman said. Iyer will lead the Kolkata based franchise in IPL 2022.
