Overview:

Over 37 matches, India emerged victorious in 34, with three clashes abandoned due to weather.

Shivam Dube’s long-standing world record streak of six years, ended on Friday (30 October) at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. India suffered a four-wicket defeat to Australia in the second T20I of the five-match series, with 40 balls still remaining.

India managed only 125 runs despite a rapid 68 off 37 balls from Abhishek Sharma. Dube was surprisingly moved down to number eight in the batting order, with Harshit Rana promoted ahead of him. The 32-year-old came to the middle during the 15th over, with just 28 balls left in the innings, but couldn’t make an impressio, scoring four runs off two deliveries before being dismissed by Xavier Bartlett.

Dube didn’t bowl as the Aussies wrapped up the chase in 13.2 overs. The loss is only the third in his T20I journey across 43 games. Previously, he had tasted defeat twice in his debut month, with losing to Bangladesh in Delhi and West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram back in 2019.

Dube’s unbeaten run in T20 internationals, which began with India’s victory over the West Indies at Mumbai on 11 December 2019, spanning 2,151 days, came to an end. Over 37 matches, India emerged victorious in 34, with three clashes abandoned due to weather.

Jasprit Bumrah’s 24-match streak of victories was also snapped in the same game, ending his flawless run since the 2021 T20 World Cup defeat to New Zealand.

Shivam Dube’s unbeaten run is the longest ever achieved by a male cricketer, and he stands alone as the only player to surpass 30 wins across formats. ODI cricket’s best winning streak of 20 matches is jointly held by Matthew Hayden, Brad Hogg, Glenn McGrath, and Ricky Ponting. In Test cricket, McGrath, Langer, Slater, Waugh, Gilchrist, Hussey, and Lee, share a record of 16 successive wins.
