Success depends on players knowing exactly what is required of them and executing it. Dube was able to contribute freely.
India’s T20 World Cup 2026 victory was not the result of a smooth and uninterrupted run, but it was shaped by a challenging moment that forced the team to recalibrate. Speaking to the Indian Express, Shivam Dube highlighted the loss to South Africa as the turning point that forced India to work on the shortcomings.
“That defeat against South Africa sharpened us as a unit. We were performing well before that match, but it made all of us raise our game. After that, we played as a completely different team, and our best performance came in the final,” Dube said.
Dube’s reflection shows that the squad converted adversity into motivation, raising the quality of their performances. While India possessed talent from the start, the defeat removed complacency. By the time they reached the final, the team was no longer just cruising. The players became more focussed, precise, and determined.
The all-rounder himself had a standout tournament, delivering when it mattered the most. Dube explained that having a clear understanding of his role before the tournament allowed him to commit fully and perform with discipline.
“My role was clearly defined by coach Gautam Gambhir and Surya bhai. If I’m asked to bowl, the plan is to bowl a tight line and restrict runs. In the last World Cup, I had a similar role, but only delivered a couple of big innings. This time, I decided to focus on one game at a time and not think too far ahead,” Dube added.
This clarity proved crucial. In high-stakes tournaments like the World Cup, individual brilliance alone cannot secure a title. Success depends on players knowing exactly what is required of them and executing it. Dube was able to contribute freely.
“I always trusted my abilities and backed myself. I was clear about what the team expected from me. I didn’t set personal goals and my focus was on winning the World Cup at home,” he concluded.
