Former Pakistan skipper Shahid Afridi has openly supported Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, insisting the Indian team still depends heavily on the experienced pair in ODI cricket. The former Pakistan captain believes both legends should remain central to India’s plans until the 2027 World Cup.
“Virat and Rohit remain the driving force of India’s batting, and judging by their performances in the latest ODI series, there’s no doubt they can continue till the 2027 World Cup,” Afridi reportedly told Telecom Asia Sport.
Afridi insisted that the legendary duo must play in the big tournament. “India must protect their senior stars, and in matches against less challenging opposition, they can rest Virat and Rohit while trying out fresh talent,” the ex-opener mentioned.
Afridi took a dig at India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir, a familiar rival from their heated exchanges during their playing careers.
“At the start of his tenure, Gautam appeared convinced that whatever he thought and said was right, but eventually it became clear that even he could be wrong,” he mentioned.
He expressed happiness as Rohit broke his record for most ODI sixes.
“Every record eventually gets surpassed, and this one has too. I’m glad it’s been broken by someone I’ve always liked. My fastest-century record lasted almost 18 years, but eventually someone surpassed it. That is the nature of cricket. One player sets a mark, and another comes along and beats it,” he concluded.
