Mumbai batting stalwart Sarfaraz Khan has been in the news for a few weeks because of his omission from the Indian side despite a scintillating performance in the domestic circuit.
No other batter has scored more runs than Khan in the last three years, and the 25-year-old has struck 13 First Class hundreds in just 50 innings. Further, Sarfaraz averages 80 in red-ball cricket. Only legendary Don Bradman averages more than him. Thus, several experts expressed their disappointment and questioned the selectors over leaving Sarfaraz out for the Border-Gavaskar trophy.
Another reason that aggravated fans’ anger was to see Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan get picked ahead of Sarfaraz. SKY, a T20I expert, has done well in red-ball cricket domestically but not enough compared to Sarfaraz. The duo shares the same dressing room, and Khan ended his silence on SKY getting a nod ahead of him.
Speaking to veteran sports journalist Vimal Kumar, Sarfaraz said he is happy for his friend and is only inspired by SKY’s selection.
“Surya getting selected is inspirational for me. We are good friends and have spent a lot of time together. I have learnt a lot from him, and he also had to wait for a long time for this opportunity. He will bring his experience to the team.”
