Overview:
Although the Indian government recently passed the National Sports Governance Act, which raises the age cap for sports administrators from 70 to 75.
Roger Binny, a key figure in India‘s 1983 World Cup triumph, has stepped down from his role as President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He had taken over in October 2022, replacing former India captain Sourav Ganguly.
Binny recently celebrated his 70th birthday on 19 July. Under the BCCI’s current constitution, officials must step aside once they reach this age limit.
Rajeev Shukla, currently the BCCI vice-president, has taken over the responsibilities on an interim basis. Shukla, who is 65, has held the vice-president post since 2022 and chaired a crucial meeting on Wednesday, which Binny did not attend.
The meeting primarily focused on sponsorship issues. The BCCI is seeking a new jersey sponsor after Dream11 ended its deal. The timing is crucial, as the Asia Cup is set to begin on 9 September, leaving little time to finalise a new deal.
“We have less than two weeks remaining, and while we’re making efforts, issuing a new tender, completing the legal formalities, and managing the technical aspects will take time. We’re not considering a short-term sponsorship just for the Asia Cup. Our priority is to lock in a long-term sponsor for the next two and a half years, leading up to the 2027 ODI World Cup scheduled for October-November,” a BCCI source told Dainik Jagran
Although the Indian government recently passed the National Sports Governance Act, which raises the age cap for sports administrators from 70 to 75. However, it has not been formally implemented.
