After India’s defeat to South Africa in just three days at Eden Gardens, Robin Uthappa has backed head coach Gautam Gambhir, dismissing the criticism aimed at his former Kolkata Knight Riders skipper. Despite being set a target of only 124, India folded for 93, sparking fresh debates about team selection, batting strategy, and whether the team is losing the edge at home.
Uthappa mentioned that the criticism aimed at Gambhir is both unjust and misplaced. Speaking on his YouTube channel, he rejected claims that the loss had anything to do with Gambhir’s decisions, pointing out that once players are on the field, the coach’s influence is minimal.
“I saw a comment yesterday saying I was backing GG. Come on, the coach isn’t the one out there playing,” Uthappa said.
He stressed that while outcomes are important, the larger context is often ignored.
“We’re focusing on the results and pointing fingers at the coach, but the bigger picture needs to be considered,” he added.
Uthappa also compared the criticism directed at him to the challenges faced by former head coach Rahul Dravid.
“When they criticised Rahul Dravid, it didn’t make sense to me. Scoring 20-30 thousand international runs is not easy. So if he can be trolled, anyone can be trolled.”
India’s heavy defeat at Eden Gardens marked their ninth loss in 18 Tests under Gambhir, raising questions about his coaching record. While India have been dominant in limited-overs cricket at home, their Test performances have been inconsistent, especially on pitches that require discipline and patience.
In Kolkata, the batting unit faltered again. Chasing 124, India were unable to cope with the pressure. Temba Bavuma‘s determined fifty was the lone highlight of proper Test batting, as India’s top and middle order were exposed.
Despite the criticism, Gambhir stood by India’s call for a turning surface, emphasising that the failure was due to non-execution of the plans. Sunil Gavaskar supported Gambhir’s stance, highlighting that similar pitches in Australia and England had never sparked such controversy.
