Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has showered praise on Rishabh Pant after his brilliant performances against Australia and England in the past few months.
The 23-year-old was the highest run-getter for Ajinkya Rahane-led side in the 2020-21 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. His incredible knocks in Sydney and Brisbane helped the visitors to seal the four-match Test series by 2-1 against the Tim Paine-led side.
Pant continued his rich vein of form during the England series as well.
Owing to his impressive batting display across formats, Pant’s IPL franchise, Delhi Capitals also named him the new captain of the team after Shreyas Iyer was ruled out of the upcoming tournament with a shoulder injury.
Shedding light on Pant’s achievements, Azharuddin said that he won’t be surprised if Pant goes on to lead the Indian team in near future.
The 58-year-old took to his official Twitter handle to praise the young wicketkeeper-batsman.
“Pant has had such a fabulous few months, establishing himself in all formats. It won’t come as a surprise if the selectors see him as a front-runner for Indian captaincy in near future. His attacking cricket will stand India in good stead in times to come,” Azharuddin tweeted.
After taking over the captaincy role for IPL 2021, Rishabh Pant said, “Delhi is where my IPL journey began six years ago. To lead this team one day is a dream I’ve always harboured and that dream comes true. I am truly grateful to our team owners, who considered me capable enough for this role.”
