World Cup-winning captain Ricky Ponting has remained active in cricket even after retirement.

The ICC T20 World Cup is less than three months away. Meanwhile, the race for players to cement their place in the team is still on. Several players are an easy pick for the selectors, while there are a few spots worth voting for.

Openers Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul are the obvious choices for the selectors. Virat Kohli as one-down, and considering Suryakumar Yadav’s sublime form, he has cemented himself as two-down.

Hardik Pandya, without a doubt, travels to Australia with the squad. Meanwhile, the keeper’s spot is the one worth looking for.

Rishabh Pant is the regular choice keeper for the Men in Blue. However, his willow has been silent in the T20Is for some time now. On the other hand, Karthik continued his sublime form since the IPL.

Hence, there is an ongoing debate over who would India pick as their regular keeper, Pant or Karthik?

A few experts rooted for Karthik and hoped for Pant’s ouster from the team, while the latter shut some critics with his maiden white ball century.

Other experts rooted for Pant but found it hard to leave Karthik out, considering his match-finishing abilities. Amid the debate, the latest to have his pick is former Australia captain, Ricky Ponting.

Ponting appeared on the latest episode of the ICC review show, where he said that he would find a way to play both the players in the starting XI.

He said, “We have seen what Rishabh is capable of in 50-over cricket and I know absolutely what he is capable of in the T20 game. Dinesh Karthik has had his best IPL ever just very recently … and I would be trying to find every possible way to have both of those guys in my team. Rishabh to bat, in that three-four-five range, and have Dinesh and maybe Hardik Pandya… if you have those guys finishing for you, well that batting line-up looks very, very dangerous.”

He further admitted that including these two would mean Shreyas Iyer or Ishan Kishan missing out.

“That means someone like (Ishan) Kishan or Surya (Suryakumar Yadav) or (Shreyas) Iyer, someone like that, might miss out and I don’t think Surya will miss out given his current form. But when you got so much talent picking an Indian team is always going to be difficult and Pant and Karthik would be the two, I would pick ahead of Kishan right now,” Ponting added.

Although, it would be interesting to see the selectors’ decision since Iyer and Kishan are not in the scheme of things for the starting XI.
