Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has heaped praise on Shubman Gill, saying the young batter will be around for a long duration and Gujarat Titans star has improved his game.

Shastri was talking about Gill’s performance in the ongoing ODI series between India and New Zealand.

Shastri said that Gill is ahead of other players because of his work ethic, adding that the young batter is grounded despite tasting success early in his career.

The right-handed batter has scored 625 runs, including a hundred and 4 fifties, in 11 ODIs.

Shubman hit a fifty in the first ODI and an unbeaten 45 in the second game. He has in contention for the 2023 World Cup in India.

Gill will not be a part of the squad when Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli return for the Bangladesh series.

“He is a quality player and will be around for a long time. He trains hard and is hungry for runs,” Ravi Shastri told Prime Video during India’s tour of New Zealand.

“His strike-rate has improved, and he is averaging 70 plus in international cricket. You are looking at a player who is developing. India want him to become a more traditional player in ODIs and Test cricket before giving him a chance in T20Is. He is very close to his T20I debut,” he added.
