Former Indian batsman Suresh Raina had left many fans and franchise officials displeased with his decision to pull out from the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 in UAE with the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Reports suggested that Raina’s decision might see the Yellow Army release him in the auction pool ahead of the IPL 2021 season but thanks to CSK skipper MS Dhoni, the southpaw earned a new contract.
According to InsideSport Moneyball, Raina has breached the INR 100 crore mark in earnings as an IPL player, apart from the new contract that fetches him Rs 11 crore for participation in the 14th edition of the cash-rich league.
Raina becomes only the fourth Indian batsman to get into triple-digits after Dhoni, RCB skipper Virat Kohli and Mumbai Indians captain Rohit Sharma. In his absence, CSK had finished 7th in the points table, and thus, failed to qualify for the playoffs.
The veteran southpaw has been a loyal servant to the CSK, having represented the team since the inception of the tournament in 2008. However, CSK got suspended for two seasons due to their involvement in the IPL betting scandal.
IN IPL 2018, Raina 445 runs in 15 matches at an average of 37.38 as CSK won the title. However, a season later, Raina scored just 383 runs in 17 matches at an average of 23.93.
Ahead of IPL 2020 in UAE, Raina had decided to pull out of the tournament, citing personal reasons. It will be interesting to see whether Raina can actually revitalize CSK’s fortunes in IPL 2021.
