India’s R Ashwin had a memorable outing in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Mohali.
He went past the legendary Kapil Dev and became the second-highest wicket-taker in the game’s longest format.
Ashwin picked up his 435th Test wickets when he dismissed Charith Asalanka in the second innings and surpassed Kapil’s tally of 434 wickets.
After India won the match by an innings and 222 runs, Ashwin took to social media, calling the milestone nothing less than a dream.
Kapil also lauded the off-spinner and backed him to take 500 wickets in Whites. On Wednesday, Ashwin revealed that he received a couple of souvenirs from Kapil. “It was very sweet of Kapil paaji. He actually sent a bouquet home and also sent a small hand-written note congratulating me for crossing him,” said Ashwin. Ashwin is now behind Anil Kumble, who dismissed 619 batters in his career.
Meanwhile, Ashwin dedicated his achievement to the legends of Indian cricket, who left an impact on his career.
“Kapil Dev, Sachin Tendulkar, Anil Kumble, Harbhajan Singh are the reason behind my success. I am deeply indebted to such people. I am also grateful to those people who helped me during my journey,” he added.
