Overview:

With KKR’s bowling lineup already dealing with injuries, Green’s ability to bowl his full quota could become a key factor in the team’s fortunes this season.

KKR fans will be watching closely as Cameron Green, the Australian all-rounder, steps into IPL 2026. The franchise broke records to acquire him for Rs 25.20 crore, making him the most expensive foreign player in league history. However, Green faces scrutiny after a lean patch in form, and his ability to deliver crucial overs remains uncertain.

Adding to the discussion, Indian spin legend Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that IPL teams should have the option to deduct money from a player’s contract if they are unable to complete their four overs. Ashwin noted that team management, including co-owner Shah Rukh Khan, would understandably feel frustrated if Green misses overs due to international commitments or fitness issues.

“I want to ask one thing about Cameron Green. Will Cricket Australia permit him to bowl his full four overs in every IPL game?” Ashwin said on his Hindi YouTube show, Ash ki Baat.

Ashwin stressed that adjusting payment in such cases is fair, especially given the significant amount involved.

“If you are KKR and Shah Rukh Khan and have invested Rs 25 crore in a player, and he tells you, ‘I will bowl only one over,’ how would that make you feel?” Ashwin remarked.

“It’s straightforward. Cricket Australia is basically saying, ‘You can play in the IPL, but Test cricket comes first.’ He’s on a central contract with them. The same principle should apply to IPL franchises. If a player bowls only two overs, the team should have the right to reduce Rs 2 crore from his contract,” he added.

“If a player can’t complete his four overs, the franchise has the right to reduce his pay. When he was bought in the auction, the expectation was that he would bowl four overs in every match. If there are limitations, the team should be allowed to adjust the contract accordingly. That’s just my straightforward and humble view,” Ashwin mentioned.

With KKR’s bowling lineup already dealing with injuries, Green’s ability to bowl his full quota could become a key factor in the team’s fortunes this season.
