Prithvi Shaw, who was expecting to be a part of the second-string team, was not considered.

Prithvi Shaw is likely to lead Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, which is set to start from January 13. The selectors will pick the team later this week. Mumbai, Kolkata, Karnataka, Delhi, Hyderabad, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand are placed in Elite Group C. Mumbai will start their campaign against Maharashtra.

Mumbai have been below-par in both the white-ball tournaments this season, crashing out in the league stage itself. While Ajinkya Rahane led the team in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Shams Mulani was the captain in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

“Shaw looks the most ideal candidate to lead the team, since the other top players like Ajinkya and Suryakumar Yadav are unavailable,” a source told TOI.
