Prithvi Shaw made a return to the Indian team for the T20I series against New Zealand. But despite in form, the 23-year-old was benched by Rahul Dravid and Hardik Pandya. Shaw recently opened up on the selection snub by the team management.
He scored 363 runs in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2022 before smashing 379 in a Ranji Trophy game. However, the captain and coach backed Shubman Gill.
Shubman struggled in the first two contests, scoring 7 off 6 and 11 off 9 before hitting 126* in the final game in Ahmedabad.
Speaking to News24 Sports, Shaw admitted that returning to the team was more important than being part of the Playing XI.
“It was good to make a return after a long time. I didn’t get a chance but got an opportunity to be in the squad and that mattered the most to me ,” he said.
“It all depended on them and I don’t feel bad a the management wanted to try out a player as he has done well. I will keep looking for chances because I have a listg of goals I want to achieve with the India national cricket team,” he added.
When asked why it took time to make a comeback, Shaw said: ” I kept on scoring runs, but that was not enough. I realized that I needed to do more and then I scored 379. It was my day and I felt that I will not let go of this opportunity. Sometimes it hits you that you are not in the team but it is never too late to return.”
