Pat Cummins replaced Tim Paine after the latter stepped down from Test captaincy following his involvement in the sexting scandal. The former Aussie skipper, Steve Smith, was made his deputy, which irked many former Australian cricketers.
However, Cummins, who took five wickets on his captaincy debut in the first Ashes Test, has backed Smith in his new role. Speaking to Fox Cricket, the current skipper, revealed why he needs Smith as his deputy.
“There are going to be times where I am out in the middle. It’s a hot day, and I am in the middle of a spell. I need to turn people for advice and experience – that is the main reason why I need Steve Smith as my vice-captain”.
