Pakistan have decided to sack Salman Ali Agha as T20I captain and replace him with all-rounder Shadab Khan, who is expected to return to the side after completing his rehabilitation from a shoulder surgery.
Shadab, who has represented Pakistan in 70 ODIs and 112 T20Is, last played against Bangladesh in June. Before the surgery, he was the vice-captain of the team.
The 27-year-old has led the Men in Green in the past and has been leading in Pakistan Super League (PSL) and domestic cricket. Salman Ali Agha was ordinary as a skipper and batter in the Asia Cup 2025.
Pakistan lost three matches against India, including the final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Former players Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis slammed Salman and urged the decision-makers to take a call on his place in the squad.
Shadab would return to action with a home series against Sri Lanka between November 11 and 15. “Shadab is planning to compete in the four-day game in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy before the Sri Lanka series,” a source said.
Pakistan will be involved in a lot of T20Is before next year’s T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. There is also a possibility of resting Shaheen Shah Afridi for the Sri Lanka series to keep him fresh for the global tournament.
