Ravi Shastri stated that the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) would provide an excellent opportunity for the selectors to find India's new white-ball captain.

Some feel Virat Kohli should play as an opener for Royal Challengers Bangalore while others feel that Kohli should be back at No.3 to give more fire power to the batting order. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri gave his verdict on Virat’s batting position in the playing XI.

The 33-year old played as opener in the last season of the Indian Premier League, scoring 339 runs in 15 innings for RCB at 28.9 and with a strike rate of 119.5. However, prior to that, Virat has always batted at No.3 in the tournament.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo’s video show T20 Time Out, Shastri felt that Kohli should continue opening for RCB, but admitted that a lot will depend on the combination of the team.

“All depends on their composition. If their middle-order is strong, Virat can open the innings.” If Virat opens the batting with Faf du Plessis; Anuj Rawat, the young Indian and uncapped player will have to bat at No.3 before Glenn Maxwell and Dinesh Karthik. However, if Virat bats one down, it will keep the batting order strong.
