West Indies batter Sherfane Rutherford has joined the Mumbai Indians from the Gujarat Titans in a trade deal ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026.
Rutherford had joined GT for INR 2.6 crore in the mega auction and has now moved to MI for the same fee. The big hitter of the ball played 13 matches for Gujarat, amassing 291 runs at a strike rate of 157.29. The 29-year-old has also played for Delhi Capitals (2019) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (2022) in the IPL.
Rutherford was with the Mumbai Indians in 2020 and the three-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024, but didn’t get a game.
In 44 T20Is, he has accumulated 588 runs at a strike rate of 137.38. He has also taken 2 wickets in the shortest format with his medium pace bowling.
There were reports of the Chennai Super Kings showing interest in the Titans’ all-rounder Washington Sundar, but the Shubman Gill-led team refused to entertain the five champions. Sundar has become a regular player for India across formats in international cricket, and his consistent performances in all departments of the game have made him an asset.
Gujarat made it to the playoffs in the previous edition but couldn’t cross the finishing line, despite Sai Sudharsan and Prasidh Krishna leading the batting charts and wicket-taking standings, respectively. The franchise would be hoping to cross the finishing line in IPL 2026.
