There was a time when getting the captaincy of the Indian team was not easy. Sourav Ganguly, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli held on to the post for a while, but in the last year, the team has been led by different individuals.
Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan, and Jasprit Bumrah have captained the Indian national cricket team.
Rohit is 35 and will only be around for a short time. Hardik Pandya is touted as a leading contender to replace him in white-ball cricket. Hardik has an impressive track record. Pant, Rahul, and Bumrah are also in the race.
But former player Ajay Jadeja feels Shreyas Iyer is the ideal candidate to become India’s skipper.
“I have been saying for a long time that Iyer has a good-thinking brain and can lead India in international cricket. He had a problem against the short ball when he returned to cricket after recovering from injury, but the batter has found a way to tackle it,” he said.
“He was India’s best batter in 2022 and made match-winning contributions across formats. Iyer can take the team to new heights if the selectors give him a chance and he is the most deserving candidate,” he added.
