Virat Kohli and Babar Azam are often lauded by former and current players for the way they play the cover drive. In fact, some of the players have even gone on to compare the two when it comes to their trademark stroke. However, legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar didn’t take their name when he was asked about the batters with the best cover drive.

He commented during Day 1 of the second Test between India and England. The visiting team was 310/5 at stumps, with captain Shubman Gill scoring a hundred, his second of the series. He shared an unbroken 99-run stand with Ravindra Jadeja and was dismissed for 41 not out. Earlier, Yashasvi Jaiswal accumulated another fifty-plus score against the English side.

Karun Nair (31) and Rishabh Pant (25) got starts but failed to carry on. KL Rahul (2) was the only failure with the bat. For England, Chris Woakes took two wickets.

Meanwhile, Gavaskar went with Joe Root of England and Kane Williamson. “Joe Root and Kane Williamson plays cover drive to perfection. When it comes to left-handers, David Gower, Sourav Ganguly and Yashasvi Jaiswal are some of the cricketets I like,” he said.

For the extra cover drive, Gavaskar gave his vote to Virat. “Virat plays the best extra cover drive and there is no one better than him,” he added.

Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket along with Rohit Sharma before the tour of England.
